The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (ゼルダの伝説 大地の汽笛, Zeruda no Densetsu Daichi no Kiteki,? lit. "The Legend of Zelda: (Train) Whistle of the Earth") is the title of an action-adventure video game in development by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS handheld game console.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced the game at the 2009 Game Developers Conference and set its release date for late 2009. The game will feature a cel-shaded art style similar to that of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Spirit Tracks's protagonist, Link, will be able to travel across the game's overworld using a cannon-equipped steam train much like the steamboat in Phantom Hourglass. Link will also be able to control a Phantom, one of the enemies from Phantom Hourglass. Spirit Tracks takes place a century after the events of Phantom Hourglass.

Il gioco è, molto presumibilmente, un seguito diretto del precedente Phantom Hourglass, ma questa volta ci sarà una locomotiva per gli spostamenti sulla mappa, che andrà a sostituire il battello a vapore del prequel.
Un altro dettaglio è il fatto che si potrà controllare un personaggio denominato “Phantom” durante l’esplorazione dei dungeon, oltre al protagonista Link (forse in modo simile a quello che succedeva in The Wind Waker).
Per il resto, Spirit Tracks è chiaramente sviluppato usando lo stesso engine di Phantom Hourglass e riprenderà molte delle meccaniche introdotte per la prima volta dal prequel: l’utilizzo del pennino per i controlli, l’uso del microfono e la possibilità di scrivere sulle mappe per nominare le più importanti.
Ovviamente saranno presenti nuovi oggetti.
Satoru Iwata ha assicurato che The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks uscirà entro la fine dell’anno corrente.
